October Meeting Program

This month, we will be working on the last of our blocks for our little quilt. It is actually the third of the four blocks that we will be doing in our meetings, and the forth block, the pinafore, you are to do at home on your own,

This block is a little two piece playsuit that has bias binding around the legs, sleeves, neck, and the bottom edge of the smocked top. You will have both pink and green bias binding in your kit, so you may choose which color you want to use.

Bring your bag of floss and a crewel embroidery needle and regular sewing supplies. There is only back smocking on this playsuit. A sewing machine will be set up so that you can sew your bias binding on the bottom edge before you begin your back smocking.

Block 4, The Pinafore

Directions for this pinafore have been e-mailed to all participants. Here are photos of the finished pinafore. Just a reminder that when you applique it to your block, the outside edges of the ruffles are not stitched down, just the tops and the inside edge near the shoulder strap. The flowers are cast-on flowers.

September meeting project

We will continue with the second block of our quilt this month. We will be working on a basic yoke dress with stacked cables. Bring regular sewing supplies and the bag of embroidery floss that you received with your kit last month. You will need that floss for each project. Debbie will be teaching the block this month. Directions and the pattern for this block are in issue 95 of Sew Beautful magazine.

August 2011 Program

Block 1

Here is a photo of the finished block in green, and also the partially completed dress in the blue print just to give you an idea of the different colors.

The first block for our little quilt is a bishop with angel wing sleeves. You may choose to make it in either green or blue. The kit will include the pleated fabric, floss, ribbon (for the green dress), the background fabric for the block, and the directions. You will need to bring basic sewing supplies as well as an embroidery needle (#8 Crewel works nicely) and a #9 milliner for the bullion roses. For those of you wanting an extra block, you may purchase an extra bishop kit in the other color as long as there are kits available.

You may add your own lace on the sleeves, hem them, or put another decorative edging on them. There is no lace in the kit.

SAGA Trunk Show 2011

On Tuesday, April 26, a few Ozark Foothills members met to work on isolette covers and blankets for our Wee Care project. We had sergers humming and completed about 20 items.

Afterward, we had a luscious potluck dinner (with plenty of coconut cream pie) and enjoyed viewing the beautiful items sent in this year's SAGA Trunk Show.

Stitchin' in the Foothills XIII

Members of the Ozark Foothills chapter welcomed Wendy Schoen of New Orleans to Stitchin' in the Foothills XIII on April 7-9, 2011. We began with a wonderful potluck at the lovely home of Carol Kick where we got to meet and greet Wendy and our out of state and out of town guests. This year we had class attendees from South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas as well as our local members here in Arkansas.
Friday morning, we set up class at the Jones Center for Families, and started learning beautiful embroidery stitches for Wendy's little hand embroidered dress called Baby Bliss.
Spring Street Grill had wonderful lunches for us which included orange rolls and their delectable homemade pies each day, then it was back to JCF for more stitching.
The group dined together at a local restaurant Friday night, then rested up for our final day of stitching on Saturday.
There were lots of exciting door prizes and raffle baskets and everyone left tired and happy.
Thanks, Wendy, for a wonderful class. Thanks to our guests for being part of our sewing workshop, and thanks to OFC members for all your hard work putting together a great weekend of sewing.

February Meeting Program

This month we will be smocking on beautiful, satin and beaded eggs. Since it is February, one of the smocking plates available to you is called "Heart to Heart." The other design is called "Victorian Lace." This project is presented in the SAGA News , Vol 27 Issue 1 in case you want to bring that issue with you for reference.

Susan will be teaching this class for us and has prepared kits that include all supplies for $3.00. Just bring your regular scissors, thimble, and other sewing necessities.

Pleating with Helen

The pleating program this month will cover how to pleat a variety of fabric types including cotton, silk, wool, rayon, linen, plaids, "waled" fabrics (pique and corduroy) and even knits. Please bring your pleater, if you have one, and needles, pleating thread, tools for changing needles, etc. I will bring an irons and lace shaping boards for any needed pressing. Your kit will include written instructions and samples of each of the fabrics mentioned.

November Meeting Program -- Smocked Gift Bag

The November meeting will be at 7:00 on November 16 at JoAnn's Fabrics in Fayetteville. There is a small classroom at the back of the store. Come early to do your shopping with your SAGA membership discount since we will probably not have time to shop after the meeting.

Susan will be teaching us how to make beautiful smocked gift bags. Below is the supply list for the November project:

18 by 22 in. piece of fabric pleated with 6-8 rows of pleats 1 in below the top of the fabric.
Finish the long top edge of the fabric with a serger rolled edge, or edge joining a piece of ½ lace edging.
18 by 22 in cotton or cotton/polyester blend).This will be for the lining if you wish to line the bag. They can be identical or fabrics that are contrasting.
½ yard of lace edging if desired
Embroidery floss for smocking design to match fabric or contrast.
Needle for smocking (#7 darner recommended)
1 yd. ribbon (no wider than 1/4") per bag (for drawstring ties)

Meeting Program - Tuesday October 26

Debbie will be teaching at the next meeting. Oct. 26th. She will be teaching a SAGA approved class, Fun with Fagoting. We will learn how to use the Fagoting stitch as an embellishment.
Kit includes 10 page handout, all threads, rickrack, lace and bias tape.
You will need to bring scissors ,crewel embroidery needle size 7/8 and double sided tape. kit fee 3.00
One artisan point will be awarded.
The meeting will start promptly at 7 pm. Please come early to visit and participate in Show and Share. The building will be open by 6:15.

September Program
Strawberry Christmas Ornament

The program for our September meeting is a Christmas ornament made in the shape of a strawberry. Diana, who designed this original ornament, will teach us to make this unique ornament. Kits will be $2.00 and will include floss, Styrofoam egg, and pleated fabric. Bring your smocking needle, scissors, and regular sewing supplies.

August Meeting Program - Chicken Scratch Christmas Apron

The class project will be to complete the smaller, pocket piece. You will need to bring embroidery scissors, and an 8" hoop that is tight! You will have Chicken Scratch embroidery directions and fabric (2 yards), to finish a bib or half apron. (Depending on the number of kits needed, there may be extra fabric available to purchase, if you need it for your apron pattern.)

Kits will be no more than $10. They will include fabric, directions, floss and needles.

July Program

The program for July is a woolen skate Christmas ornament. Diana will be leading the class for making this original ornament. E-mail Diana if you want a kit. Kit supplies ($2.00) will include wool, embroidery floss, beads, and the metal for the skate. You should bring basic sewing supplies: crewel needle, scissors, pins, thimble, and magnifier if you need one. You might want to bring a jingle bell or bow to trim the toe of the skate. We will have two pairs of needle-nose pliers to bend the wire for the skate, but if you have a pair and want to bring them, feel free to do that.

May Meeting

The May meeting will be at the John Powell Senior Center Annex at 7:00 on May 25, 2010. The program will be by Bedetta and will be beaded embellishment on fabric. The completed project will be a beaded eyeglass case.

Supply list:

To make the beaded embroidery eyeglass case you will need the following:

1. 8” embroidery hoop, preferably a hands free hoop
2. #10 milliner needle or beading needle
3. 12”X12” piece of fabric interfaced for stability (I used dupioni silk with a smoother silk fabric for the lining and interfaced the outside fabric with a light weight tricot fusible interfacing.)
4. A piece of fabric 9” X 9” for the lining
5. A piece of low loft batting 9” X 9” for interlining
6. Polyester thread, either white or color to match beads and a sewing needle
7. Pencil or pen
8. Double-sided tape
9. Green glass seed beads 10/0 or 11/0
10. Pink glass seed beads 10/0 or 11/0
11. Light and magnification if needed

Kit will contain:
1. Tissue Paper-I drew my design on tissue paper and then basted the design on the silk thru the tissue paper.
2. Sequins
3. Swarovski flower beads

Visit to Fiber Arts Studio

The April meeting was a wonderful visit to the fiber arts studio of Jennifer Fay. We were first taken on a tour of the art studios in Arts Underground. Then, Jennifer told us all about dyeing polyester fabric using a heat/pressure transfer process, showed us some examples of her work, allowed us to try our hand at it. It was great fun! April Meeting

We are going to “Art Underground” on the Square in Fayetteville. Our host fiber artist is Jennifer Faye. She has planned a really cool, hands-on project that involves pleated fabric, dye, and fun – you won’t want to miss it! Meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Optional Dutch-treat dinner will be at Tim’s Pizza on the Square – meet at 5:15 p.m.

Parking: You should be able to park on the square or a side street.

Directions: You will be coming down College Avenue, turn right onto Center Street and go to the square.

If you are joining us for dinner, come on over to Tim’s Pizza. If you are just coming for the meeting, take the elevator downstairs to Art Underground.

If you would like to carpool to the Square, let Carol know – we can meet at Evelyn Hill’s Shopping Center at 5:00 p.m. and leave cars there.

Carol sews at Mary Lou Nall Workshop

Saturday, April 17, was an all-day workshop by Mary Lou Nall, Bernina teacher extraordinaire. SAGA members, Diana, Carol, and Tawana attended. Saturday's classes were all about "feet!" The morning class was devoted to the most common sewing machine feet and how to use them, and the afternoon class was about some specialty feet and the fun applications using them. Here's a great photo of Carol as she demonstrates using the gathering foot to add a gathered ruffle to a straight piece of fabric. Good job, Carol!

Stitchin in the Foothills with Carol Ahles

Ozark Foothills was proud to host Carol Ahles on March 26-27, 2010. We had 19 stitchers from 6 states attending. Carol was a wonderful teacher who showed us how to use our sewing machines to do many different heirloom techniques, and then we finished up by constructing a beautiful baby blanket of Austrian flannel with hand-made lace attached with a corded hemstitch.

Thanks to Carol for sharing her knowledge of machine heirloom techniques with us, to all the Ozark Foothills chapter members who worked so hard to make this a great stitching experience for us, and to our guests who came long distances to join us.

March Meeting

January Meeting Program

Designing, Drafting and Constructing a Custom Size Garment Bag will be the program for our next meeting. Tuesday the 26th of January. The weather has settled down and we are going to get busy with the new list of Programs scheduled for 2010. The new officers are working hard, we all hope to see you there!

Here is a photo of the finished Garment Bag. It turned out a little different from my original vision, but that is how designing works. This is about creativity as much as making a garment bag, and learning to draft a pattern, and that is what I hope to stimulate here. Let's wake up our imaginations, and learn new skills.

Here are some things you will need to bring. A hanger that will fit the garment you intend to make the bag for. If at all possible bring the garment. If not, bring measurements of the garment Length X Width so the finished bag will fit the garment well. If you have no clue about size, you can use the measurements I used.
Here is where the creativity comes in. Decide if you want an Heirloom looking garment bag, a contemporary one that will make a good storage for fun style garments, or a simply one without much embellishment for just sturdy storage that will protect a garment from dust and the elements. Dig through all those trims you have deep in your stash, buttons, lace "scraps", rick rack, piping cord, or ready made piping, etc. If you have zippers stashed, this would be a good time to look through those. Make yourself a kit of what you find. Add to your kit, Rulers, paper scissors, fabric scissors fabric marking pen, tape, and #2 pencil an eraser and fine point sharpie marker and a note pad to record those design choices. I'll bring the paper for everyone to cut your pattern from.

Now about the fabric. Your decision of the type/look of fabric you want will depend on your design choices. Most of our time will be spent on how to make a bag to fit the garment, design choices for the construction, making the pattern and cutting it out and begin to lay out some of those embellishments and pinning them in place. Decide ahead of time if you would like a flat, one garment bag or one with boxed sides that will make it deep enough to hold more than 2 or 3 garments. Want a pocket in it for accessories, write down in your notebook what your want. Don't want to do a zipper? How about Velcro closing at the bottom? Again, this is your bag, based on your needs, but the pattern will need to be planned to work with your design choices. I am giving you some time to think about what you might want. We can move through the program quicker with some preplanning.

Here is some of what I have been inspired by: (See Photo) Fabric and bold rick rack from JoAnn Fabrics. Zipper, Ribbon, buttons. I am still searching through my treasures.

There will be fabric in white, pink, ecru, and blue and hankies available from our Treasure Closet if you would like to to have a simple bag and follow along in class with it or trim one with hankies for a crazy patch look for embellishment. The cost will be very minimal, but has yet to be decided. If you prefer, you can bring your own. You will need at least enough fabric to be double the length of your garment plus 20". So for a garment that is 30" long, you will need 80", which would be about 2 1/4 yards, 3 yards will cover most any design changes. You can mix or match or coordinate any number of fabrics for a composite pieced design of trims, fabric and embelishments. A glue stick can be a great basting tool for finishing later. It will hold those cute trims in place
If you would like to construct during the program, bring your machine.

November Meeting Project

Our November meeting will be at a different place and on a different date!! We will meet at Tawana's house on Monday, November 23, at 7:00.
Our project will be a wool embroidered ornament. Stitches used will be blanket stitch, back stitch, and French knots. Cost of the kit for the project is $4.00. Items in the kit will be pattern, wool fabric, thread, needle, beads, ribbon, and bell.
You will need to bring paper scissors, fabric scissors, a thimble (if you use one), and don't forget your sewing glasses!

October Meeting Program

Debbie will be teaching our October Meeting Program - 7 pm, Tue. Oct 27, 2009, at the John Powell Center, Springdale, AR. She will show us how to make this beautiful wool pin cushion. It measures 4"w 7"l 3"h. The Kit will be $5.00.

The kit includes precut hand dyed 100% wool for bottom, 100% felted black wool for top and sides 5 colors of wool thread for embroidery, glass seed beads and pattern.

You will need to bring the following items:
tapestry needle
embroidery needle
scissors
clear ruler
white chalk pencil
( 2 ) 3/4" buttons. Debbie used mother of pearl. You can add these later.

Stitches used in this project:
Ladder stitch
Siennese stitch
Single loop stitch
whipped double running stitch
fern stitch
design also covers French knots and bullion knot

Debbie will have extra rulers and chalk pencils.

September Meeting

The September meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 7:00 p.m. at the John Powell Senior Center. Diana McGruder will teach us how to put a beautiful monogram on a white linen baby pillowcase. The cost of the pillowcase is $5.50. You will need to bring floss, needles, paper scissors, transfer marker, tape, embroidery hoop, and a light box if you have one. Bring whatever color (s) of floss that you would like to use. White on white is particularly beautiful, but you may use any color that you like. The monogram will have additional simple embroidery accents.

Ozark Foothills Girls are Amazing!!

Here we are all stitching up a storm at our hostess Diana's home on Saturday, June 6. We had lots of fun and accomplished a lot! We did not get finished, but we are well on the way. Here are pictures of those that were hard at work so that everyone will have a fabulous favor at their place setting during lunch one day at the national SAGA convention. Thank you Diana for putting up with us. We enjoyed the working area and the picnic overlooking your beautiful vegetable garden.

Here is Tawana sewing on buttons, wonder if she dreamed of sewing buttons that night. She sure did a lot of them.

Here is Joan doing some fine assembly work. The favors have been creatively warped for now so as not to give away the surprise of the great little gift from OFC. If you want to see what we are doing, come join the fun at our next workday. We really need your help!

Convention Favor Work Day

Don't forget that we will be meeting at Diana's house for a work day at 10 am Saturday June 6. We will continue working on the table favors for the national SAGA convention. We can probably get most of the favors finished if we have enough workers. You can bring your favorite salad or dessert. Scissors, and needles will be needed by all who attend. If you are unable to attend, please ask how you can help with the finishing. This is a large effort and the more we have working on it will make it easier to complete. The favors are well under way. The work was easy and we were able to catch up with our visiting while working. Here are some photos of the action. Tawana, Cheryl, and Bedetta were stitching them on the machine. Debbie put her quilting expertise to work to cut out the pieces at record speed. Gluing, stitching, stacking, cutting, it all went like clockwork. Sandy kept everyone supplied with new stacks of parts and kept the quality under control. Tawana filled us in on her recent trip to Spain while stitching away. Barbara brought all the labels ready to stitch on, and that helped to get more done during this session. Our next workday will be at Diana's house on June 6. Don't miss out on the fun. We could sure use your help.

We had a great time learning to make bullion animals and strawberries (an original design!) at our meeting Tuesday evening. Holly is a great teacher with lots of patience for those of us who ripped out strawberries or made multiple bunny tails before we got a "good" one.

There are 4 onesies left with directions, photos, needle, and floss, so if you did not make it to the meeting and want a kit, they are stored in the cubby at the Sr. Center, and you can get one for $3.00 at the next meeting.
